OkHotshot (an on-chain analyst) recentlyshared on Twitterthat over 101 NFT Discord servers were hacked in July 2022 alone. This is not a definitive number, but it gives an idea of the scope of the problem.

At least 101 NFT discords were compromised in July through social engineering collaboration, audits, bookmarks, and impersonation. These scammers have stolen millions from our community and justice will come sooner or later.

“Data shows four projects were compromised twice in July: EY3KON, Tasty Bones, Universe by Barnabe and Angry Dinos,” the person added.

They went on to say that among the bad projects, the Tasty Bones hacks were less than ten days apart. So it shows that hackers were a real threat to the community.

In addition, 107 breaches were registered in June and 17 NFT Discord servers fell victim to scammers’ traps in the first week of August.

Genuine non-fungible token holders have lost billions of dollars to these scams. These NFTs are worth hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars. OkHotshot believes that focusing on “education” and “security awareness” in the community is the best way to prevent these types of security breaches from occurring.

The recent surge in popularity of these non-fungible tokens is due to a lack of information available both offline and online, making them a popular target for scammers and hackers. People who create and buy NFTs both risk having their digital assets stolen right from their e-wallets.

Discord is becoming a popular breeding ground for scams

Discord is a social instant messaging platform with over 150 million active users, similar to Instagram and Facebook. Users can join or create private communities, known as “servers,” and communicate with each other through voice calls, video calls, and text messages.

You can even share media files that are only available to other users on a specific part of the server. For example, the platform’s adaptability and large user base make it an attractive target for scammers. Messages on the server are usually sent by “trustworthy” users, making it easy to trick others into sharing their account information.

Other ways your NFTs can be stolen

Scammers also use emails with links attached asking them to enter relevant information about their accounts, giving them easy access to all of your digitized assets.

This is commonly known as phishing, and owners have also been stripped of their hard-earned assets through direct messages. In addition, false advertising on social media via posts or stories also plays a major role.

How do you keep your NFTs secure?

Always check any links sent to you via Discord or any other channel. Contact the owners of the NFT project to determine if the listings shown are genuine. Most legitimate NFT projects, like other companies, will never need or request your private account information.
