Chainstack releases a report that examines Eth2’s customer development data.

The team at Chainstack – creators of an affordable, easy-to-use platform for building, running and scaling blockchain applications – has released a report that takes a look under the hood of the massive collective effort to build the multi-client Eth2.

The Eth2 2021 Client Development Report, published by Chainstack, is an in-depth analysis focused on tracking the development and engagement data of Eth2 client developers, all of whom host their code on GitHub. The primary source of developer data used to compile the report is derived from the client code Eth2 will release on GitHub in late 2020.

Research conducted over several months reveals the impressive diversity of Eth2’s customers and the factors that contribute to the success of the open source project – a point of particular interest for the largest decentralized network with smart contract functionality.

The main findings are as follows:

1. A total of 20 years of work by 10 independent teams of Eth2 customers contributed to the launch of the backbone.

2. The Ethereum Foundation has committed a publicly announced amount of over $2,000,000 to the development of Eth2’s clients.

3. More than 5,000 developers have worked on and contributed to the five customer projects that are now part of the Eth2 backbone.

4. Thanks to the efforts of all the teams, Eth2 has become a true multi-client network, supporting five clients on the backbone from the start.

5. Enterprise has the largest number of developers. In terms of the number of individual developers who have actually pushed the code that makes the clients what they are, Teku, which is called an enterprise client, ranks first.

Eth2 client results:

1. Written in Go, Prysm, with almost twice as much development activity as other clients, becomes a core Eth2 client, just like Go Ethereum in Eth1.

2. The choice of programming language follows the popularity of the Eth1 core network client, with client number one Geth, written in Go, and client number two OpenEthereum (formerly Parity), written in Rust.

3. Unlike all other companies developing listening clients, Prysmatic Labs is an Ethereum-only gaming company.

4. Prysm is a top client project, with average activity per developer increasing nearly sevenfold between 2018 and 2019 and holding steady since then.

5. The Nimbus client, which is designed for resource-constrained devices, attracts enough interest from developers to rank third in popularity.

The launch of the Eth2 backbone was a major milestone for the blockchain industry and for DeFi in particular. Beyond the hype and passion, we wanted an objective, well-researched and insightful look under the hood of this massive collaborative effort. As a company, we continue to prioritize the blockchain community. The publication of this original report is an effort to help IT companies and innovators better understand our changing industry.
