Twitter users can now send bitcoin (BTC) with a single tweet after digital payments app Bottlepay launched its built-in Bitcoin feature for social media.

Transactions between Twitter users can now apparently be done via a simple Twitter template: @bottlepay sends 1000 sat to @twitteruser. The order can be executed directly from the Twitter app, and the bitcoin is automatically transferred from one user to another.

Bottlepay describes itself as a global disruptor for payments and raised $15 million in a startup round in late February. The Bottlepay app can also be used with other social media platforms such as Reddit and Discord. The beta version of the app reportedly attracted 20,000 users without marketing, and that in just over a month since its launch on the 10th. In the month of February, $2.4 million worth of transactions were settled.

With bitcoin’s transaction costs set to rise sharply between 2020 and 2021, it’s reasonable to doubt the currency’s suitability for an everyday social payment app. Bottlepay circumvents the high cost of bitcoin transactions by using the Lightning network, a tier 2 solution that avoids network congestion by taking bitcoin transactions out of the loop.

Bottlepay Social Payments from Bottlepay is a much-needed update to today’s cumbersome and outdated payment systems and a step forward to smoother, easier transactions, says Mark Webster, CEO of Bottlepay.
