Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has long had an interest in NFTs.
Mahomes believes in the sentimental value of collectibles
In an interview with CNBC last yearhe explained that growing up he was always a sports fan and that he and his father both shared a hobby of collecting collectibles of their favorite teams and their favorite players.
He believes this phenomenon will continue in the future and in the digital world as more and more people engage with NFTs.
NFTs are the perfect vehicle for collectibles as they are essentially the same as a physical version, except that the nature of digitization allows one to attribute far more utility to them.
NFTs can be used by brands to issue collectibles (like Mahomes likes to collect), they can represent fractional ownership of native Web3 brands and communities (egdoodles andThe Bored Ape Yacht Club.
Mahomes believes this is very important, and it certainly was an important part of his childhood. He places a high sentimental value on memorabilia and believes there is a huge industry for NFTs to capitalize on.
Unlike the physical world, the presence of collectibles in the form of an NFT means they can more easily be used to integrate and enhance other aspects of the fan experience.
For example, it’s much easier to automate discounts on ticket sales or merchandise if you just need to connect your metamask.
Not only that, NFTs allow fan bases to mingle and interact with each other in ways that weren’t possible before. NFTs as avatars are more popular than ever and NFT gated communities are also becoming more popular.
NFTs can even be used as avatars in games and in metaverses like Tamadoge in the Tamaverse.
Mahomes promotes the video highlights platform “NFL All Day”.
Mahomes has partnered with NFL All Day, a company that sells NFT card packs to collectors. New packs are sold each week with different players and vary in price based on rarity.
Once cards are acquired from card packs, people can trade them in the marketplace. It makes for a very seamless user experience and is a massive improvement over the days when people collected plastic cards at corner stores.
Other athletes enter the crypto space
Athletes and celebrities from all over the world are entering the crypto space. Logan Paul and Mike Tyson both speak publicly about their NFT hobbies and Khabib Nurmagomedov has promoted collections of their own alongside his friend Hasbulla.
However, not all athletes entering the world of crypto are focused on NFTs. There are many, like UFC fighter Ben Askren, who choose to focus their time on Bitcoin. He does this because he believes it gives him the highest property rights known to mankind, and NFTs cannot say the same.
Dapper Labs is one of the leading companies focused on bringing NFTs into the mainstream and they aim to do so by utilizing a network of high profile celebrities to promote the benefits of NFTs.
Dapper Labs has worked extensively with NBA Topshot and was the original developer of Flow – the blockchain that is now set to be implemented in Instagram through a partnership with Meta.
The promise of combining flow, celebrity and social media is a huge commercial opportunity: Selling merchandise directly to fans is already a major industry, but being able to sell digital collectibles that are also useful opens a lot of doors for one Allowing Fan Switching experience and public figures to explore different revenue models.
