Thailand seems interested in attracting the attention of Japanese cryptocurrency holders through tourism. The country wants to create a coded tourism hotspot, and the first target country is the Land of the Rising Sun.
The programme aims at adding new high-cost segments
According to the Bangkok Post, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) wants to make the country the first to welcome crypto owners, targeting Japanese tourists early on.
This move comes in the context of a pandemic that has hit Thai tourism hard. The program likes to highlight high-priced segments.
After discussions with the Technology Promotion Association (Thailand-Japan), the TAH determined that one of the target groups should be Japanese crypto owners.
They substantiated their claims by relying on the performance of cryptocurrencies in recent years. In a related development, TAT’s Bull Run program also calls for exploring the introduction of digital currency in tourist shops across Thailand.
Yutasak Supasorn, governor of the TAT, praised the cryptocurrency market and its compatibility with Thailand’s expectations for boosting tourism in the post-pandemic era :
If we can prepare the country for the crypto currency market, it will help to attract more wealthy tourists, especially from the younger and richer generation.
Even Elon Musk might be interested in visiting Thailand, according to an official
According to the Bangkok Post, citing data from Dalia Research, 11% of Japanese cryptocurrency owners own their own businesses, which is higher than the world average (7%). These figures are to some extent encouraged by the tourism authorities to focus on Japan.
Supasorn also suggested that Tesla CEO Elon Musk might be interested in visiting Thailand after the launch.
This year, the government has decided to set a target of 8 million arrivals of foreign tourists, i.e. less than 10 million. However, TAT plans to launch a massive sales campaign after April to attract tourists in the third quarter of 2021.
