Maisie Williams
Maisie Williams burst into the crypto Twitter spotlight with a message asking her followers about Bitcoin in 2020.
Williams, best known for playing Arya Stark on Game of Thrones, asked her 2.7 million followers if they thought they should in the tweet.Go long Bitcoin.” In response to the tweet, more than 55% of respondents agreed in favor of bitcoin and signaled “yes” to their question. In addition to answering the poll, her tweet gained tremendous traction from both crypto advocates and critics.
Williams has expressed keen interest in the bitcoin industry, although she has neither confirmed nor denied having followed the proposal.
Gwyneth Paltrow
Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow has dedicated herself to cryptocurrency with an article about the formation of digital currencies. The article, published deep in what was then crypto winter in 2018, is essentially a FAQ forum covering the basics of everything cryptocurrency and bitcoin related.
Blockchain platform Abra CEO Bill Barhydt added his voice in explaining the idea, responding to inquiries about everything from what bitcoin is to how users can get the virtual currency. When asked about the price of Bitcoin, Barhydt replied:
“Ultimately, everything has value because people agree it has value. Government-issued money like the US dollar has value because we all agree it does, especially because our government only accepts paying tax debts in its own money.”
Richard Branson
Sir Richard Branson is one of the biggest names in business with a massive investment and career behind him. With over 400 companies across all industries, he’s a mogul who understands opportunity.
With his investment, Branson has expressed his commitment to Bitcoin as an investment worth considering. However, he has not disclosed that he has made any investments in Bitcoin, either specifically through a trading platform or in general.
Elon Musk
No cryptocurrency list of celebrity names would be complete without Elon Musk. The CEO of Tesla has been one of the most prominent names to champion bitcoin, with Tesla adding $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin to its balance sheets in 2021. Since then, it has held 75% of its holdings.
Musk’s relationship with cryptocurrency is difficult to pin down. He has cryptocurrency as “Sideshow to sideshow‘ and has championed the meme token Dogecoin heavily, to the point where the industry is unsure if genuine sarcasm exists. Whether or not he genuinely endorses bitcoin, dogecoin, and cryptocurrency, his vocal approach to the industry has undoubtedly garnered massive attention from outliers.
Snoop Dogg
Like Musk, Snoop Dogg has been vocal about promoting the memecoin Dogecoin — which is part of the “Doge Army.”
In 2021, Snoop also announced he would be releasing the NFT Collection, which will chronicle the rapper’s life from his earliest memories to the present. Just one of the eight tracks in the “A Journey with the Dogg” collection drop, which lasted just 48 hours, brought the rapper $100,000.
Other celebrities in the NFT scene
Beyond cryptocurrencies, the field of digital assets has developed in the last two years. Brands like Coca Cola, Asics, Nike and Taco Bell have introduced NFTs into their services and collectibles.
Serena Williams
The American tennis player not only entered the world of NFTs, but jumped right into it by joining the board of a well-known NFT sports token platform. Williams is on the Sorare board as a partner to offer in-depth analysis of the sports sector from a player’s perspective. Williams has expressed excitement at the idea of entering the NFT market with the sports-focused digital company.
Regarding Williams’ entry into the NFT space, Sorare’s CEO commented:
“Serena is one of the most important figures in sport and culture, who has redefined the figure of the athlete and the modern entrepreneur, also thanks to the unprecedented success of her investments in several new realities. The strategic advice Serena will bring to the build of one of the most recognized sports entertainment brands will be invaluable. I am thrilled to have her on the team.”
Paris Hilton
Paris Hilton and designer Blake Kathryn collaborated to produce a trio of NFT pieces. In April 2021, the artworks were all purchased for just over a million dollars. She has also said that she believes the NFT sector is the next evolution in artistic expression:
“I see NFTs as a way to innovate, empower others, and push the boundaries of how artists interact with their fans. I see NFTs or non-fungible tokens as the future of the creator economy. And blockchain technology will allow artists to get paid for second sales too. This has never happened before and it’s mind-blowing how much this can change things for artists.”
Tony Hawk
One of the most prominent skateboarders in the world, Tony Hawk made his debut in the NFT community by creating a video of himself performing a trick. Hawk performed moves “for the last time” in videos that will live on the blockchain forever. 16,600 different digital collectibles of varying rarity were made from the tricks. Hawk announced his entry into the field by saying:
“It’s humbling to see these tricks spring to life in the digital age, even after I’ve performed my last ones. It gives fans a chance to relive them in a new way.”
